I have moved the link to the correct runlevel - and changed the K to S in the file name so it starts when that runlevel is entered.

I have a script called change-backgrounds - it works if I use it manually (even when run from /etc/init.d).

I placed it in /etc/init.d with a link to it in /etc/rc1.d....

i've always used the Alternate - if I use the Desktop, will I still be abler to choosed the hdd, manually partition it and decide where I want grub installed?

I have installed libboost-dev. It helped but 'make' then resulted in:
~/Desktop/inq-1.0.0$ make
/usr/bin/qmake-qt4 -o MyMakefile inq.pro
/usr/bin/uic-qt4 devicedialog.ui -o ui_devicedialog.h...

Point taken steeldriver and thanks pdc - your suggestion enabled me to do
QMAKE=/usr/bin/qmake-qt4 ./configure

On the next step:
make

I get:
/usr/bin/qmake-qt4 -o MyMakefile inq.pro
g++...
