  1. [ubuntu] VNC: There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

OK, so I got VNC to work per this HowTo.

It's almost perfect, except for the following errors:

  2. Re: HOWTO: Setup vncserver + gdm on Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop

    I fixed it.

All I did was replace the line:

    server_args = -inetd :1 -query localhost -geometry 1920x1080 -depth 24 -once -DisconnectClients=0 -NeverShared passwordFile=/root/.vncpasswd

    With:...
  3. Re: HOWTO: Setup vncserver + gdm on Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop

Hmmm... this almost works. By "almost" I mean the remote desktop appears briefly, then causes my vnc client (RealVNC 4.1) to close immediately.

Any idea what could be the reason and how to fix...
  4. [gnome] Re: [SOLVED] Remote Desktop doesn't work on Hardy

@foxmajik I agree that vino is useless if one can't assume that the user is already logged into his Gnome desktop. This is indeed my case and after making vino work, I am going to disable it and...
  5. [SOLVED] Re: Why is Remoted Desktop provided if it's Useless?

Bingo! That was my problem. I (mis)interpreted "Only allow local connections" as LAN connections, not as local loop. I now see the balloon tip that says "local connections" means local loop.

  6. [SOLVED] Re: Why is Remoted Desktop provided if it's Useless?

That's exactly the answer I wanted to hear.

I knew there must be a good reason for providing the GUI-based setup as part of the core Ubuntu install, but for some reason, I am receiving the...
  7. [SOLVED] Why is Remoted Desktop provided if it's Useless?

This question pertains to Ubuntu 8.04 but it was true for Ubuntu 6.06 (and perhaps relevant to Ubuntu 10 as well).

I am trying to set my desktop to be accessed remotely via LAN.

    Instead of...

    [ubuntu] Re: WOL not working

    Are you sure about that?

I am able to to wake up the computer from off by simply hitting Ctrl+F1 on the keyboard, so I know that the motherboard's circuits are "listening" even when the computer...

    [ubuntu] Re: WOL not working

It's built into the motherboard (ABIT IP35 Pro (LGA 775), BIOS ver. 17, latest version!)

    I've been using two methods:

MC-WOL from a remote Windows XP laptop.
    DD-WRT router (Linksys...

    [ubuntu] Re: WOL not working

It turns out that the green LED on the NIC is OFF when the computer is off.

Which means this isn't really a Linux problem but more likely a motherboard or BIOS problem.

Do you know of a good...

    [ubuntu] WOL not working

I followed the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=360901 to be able to turn on my Ubuntu 8.04 workstation remotely.

But I can't seem to make this work.

    I know that my...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Remote Power-on Ubunto 8.04 from Windows XP

Ouch... I was hoping to get away with much less than compiling, building and installing several packages.

Is there a simple, tiny downloadable .exe for Windows XP that is equivalent to Ubuntu's...
  15. [ubuntu] Remote Power-on Ubunto 8.04 from Windows XP

I found a nice tutorial on "how to power on remotely with WakeOnLan (WOL)"

    Problem is... it's for a Linux-to-Linux setup.

I need to be able to achieve exactly the same but turn on Ubuntu 8.04...
  16. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 can't get 1920x1080 from my new LCD monitor

I don't have any 'nvidia-settings' file on my system, but I do have 'nvidia-xconfig' and I just happened to solve the problem myself. Here is how:

    sudo -i
    nvidia-xconfig

    Unfortunately, this...
  17. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 can't get 1920x1080 from my new LCD monitor

Yes, I tried forcing it using xrandr. It did nothing.

    Any idea how to proceed?
  18. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 can't get 1920x1080 from my new LCD monitor

Yes, I have been using proprietary NVIDIA accelerated graphic driver (instead of the Ubuntu open source ones) for over 2 years now.

    I found the following article:

  20. [SOLVED] Ubuntu 8.04 can't get 1920x1080 from my new LCD monitor

I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.

Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest...

    [ubuntu] Re: Alt + Ctrl + F10 == Time Bomb ???

Hmmm... Alt + Ctrl + F7 will actually restore it to where it was (Gnome desktop). It doesn't really perform a reset, it only looks that way.
