I had a similar problem after upgrading to 11.10. (My custom icons remained but all others were a generic icon, so folders, files, mounted file systems etc all looked the same)

This just happened to me today. The above soloution worked perfectly.
I can confirm that both the printer and scanner driver work,
.... but SANE doesn't detect the scanner while GIMP does.
All in all quite easy to install and get to work.

I have being having the exact same problem.
The Nvidia installer not finding the kernel source.
After reading this thread it finally clicked that grub was still pointing to the old kernel.

I followed Dude-PWB advice and got hold of the rtl8192e_linux_2.6.0012.1210.2009 file and installed it with the make and make install commands and and wireless device worked after reboot on my N140...
Personally I am more comfortable with KDE because thats what I used when I first used Linux and have customised it to my preferences. I still find the menu layout in Gnome to be better organised...
