During installation, instead of formatting your Ubuntu partition as ext4, try using ext3. I've solved a good number of problems just by sticking with the tried and true ext3.
If you're using Windows Vista, your printer should automatically show up in the add printer dialog.
If it doesn't, see my previous post about firewalls, and also be sure that your Vista box is on...
