Kdenlive works very well, and there's a liveCD if you don't like the KDE libraries on your system. Efficient, no nonsense interface, it's pretty easy to use, and it has a raft of input/output...

There may be a copy of your old wallpaper in ~/.cache/wallpaper. Or it may, for some reason, be hanging out in /usr/share/backgrounds (wp's you add shouldn't be in there, but who knows?).
