The problem, it seems was with lightdm. I still don't know what happened, but purging and reinstalling lightdm magically helped!

All of a sudden, Unity does not start when logging in. I have only a desktop, no dash, no panels, nothing else. The problem is limited to one user account.

....unfortunately the above fix only worked for one session. Still at the same spot as I was this morning... :-/
Solved it:
Log in and open a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1). If that is not possible from your user account, do it from a guest account, and replace DISPLAY=:0 with DISPLAY=:1 below-

I've been looking for this too. I can use e.g. amixer from the command line to change volume etc of my devices, but how to I tell gnome which device to use?
My GUI freezes, then tells me "Could not donwload the release notes, please check internet connection", or something like that. Could it just be that the ubuntu servers are overloaded atm?
