Hmmm, try re-installing nm-applet:
sudo apt-get purge nm-applet
sudo apt-get install nm-applet
The purge will get rid of the program and the config files for it so the install will start...
Do you have any other programs or scripts that might be connecting your wireless?
Could be Network-Manager is not managing the network just now. Try a reboot or check
