    Re: Beginners Programming Challenge 16

Can we presume that the length of the file will be (or should be) the exact right length? Because if so we needn't really take the length of the side, surely. Or might the input file be longer than...
  2. Re: Rythmbox+Ubuntu: Never seen anything like it before!

This freaked me out before I knew about it because my laptop would start playing random bits of music for no apparent reason.

    But yeah, cool functionality.

    Poll: Re: Evolution or Thunderbird?

Can I get anyone's opinion what how Evolution compares with Thunderbird+Lightning as an integrated email client and calendar? I used to not pay much attention to calendars but when I worked in a firm...
  5. Poll: Re: Diaspora coming next month -- anyone planning on jumping ship from Facebook?

I wondered why they called it Diaspora. I presumed it was because old friends/relatives could use it to catch up with each other from around the world. To me (being Irish) it brings to mind the Irish...

  7. Poll: Re: Diaspora coming next month -- anyone planning on jumping ship from Facebook?

It's a great idea but unfortunately I can't see any reason to set up an account. All my friends are on Facebook, and they're very unlikely to move to Diaspora en masse (for the simple fact that all...

Re: Linux users and bad GUI's?

I have two bars, and I play around with auto-hiding them. Generally if I'm only working in one program I'll fullscreen it anyway.

    Re: linux/windows: the fundamental difference?

I disagree. They are both operating systems, so for the end user they are both trying to fulfill the same role (or similar roles). It's silly to say the two can't be compared or contrasted, they're...

Re: Have you seen the programmer hierarchy?

I was actually toying with the idea of trying some Lisp once I become competent at Python. Straight to the top!
  11. Re: How difficult would it be to build my own computer?

Hi I'm just wondering, are there major cost savings to be made in building a non-top-of-the-line PC? Like, I know that by building yourself you can often get a really high-spec PC for less money than...

Re: Linux users and bad GUI's?

Plenty of people actually. Yourself and the OP represent the two extremes of this debate, whereas I imagine most people reside somewhere in the middle.

Re: Have you seen the programmer hierarchy?

I don't know Java. I'm learning Python (and FWIW I'm also surprised that Python is so high up in the list).

Re: Linux users and bad GUI's?

So he should go out and spend a few hundred quid on a PC just so you can be happy in the knowledge that he doesn't have a GUI that you don't like? Ridiculous. Some people (a lot of people in fact)...

    Re: New Trend: Coffee Bars

Not true at all. Even I can tell the difference between different coffee places. And I know relatively little about coffee; I'm sure there are some coffee connoisseurs out there who would kill you...

Re: FOSS office suites and MS Word

It's not "so yesterday", as pretty much all businesses are still doing it today. As someone said, doesn't work so well in law firms, where editing docs in progress is a BIG deal.
  18. Re: Random thought, how did Ubuntu get Rhythmbox installed anyway?

I had the same thing recently... I can't remember which packages they were, but a few days ago I decided to try and download the source of a few packages I already have installed and compile them,...

I don't know anything about the gst module but it could be one of the many modules that has yet to be ported to Python 3. Python has a large standard library so it takes time to port the whole thing....

Re: FOSS office suites and MS Word

So is that to say that if I saved a .odt in one office suite and opened it in a different one, format etc would be completely preserved?

FOSS office suites and MS Word

I have a feeling this might go to Recurring Discussions, but even so.

There has been a lot of talk here about the potential impact on OOo if Oracle were to stop maintaining it. While I don't...
  25. Re: Don't Count on Oracle to Keep OpenOffice.org Alive

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/08/24/adobe_oracle_axis_of_evil/
