  1. [ubuntu] Can't connect to campus wireless network

I've got Ubuntu 10.10 loaded on my HP mini, and haven't had any problem with wireless connection before. But since I've started going to my local community college, I've been completely unable to...

[ubuntu] Re: PulseAudio not picking up my laptop mic

That dropdown menu in your screenshot for picking the input doesn't show up on my machine. The only port on my netbook here is marked with both a headphones and microphone symbol, so I presume it's...

[ubuntu] PulseAudio not picking up my laptop mic

Hi folks. I'm trying to set up Skype on my HP Mini 110, but the built-in mic isn't getting picked up by Pulseaudio, which appears to be the only sound server Skype supports. Unfortunately, I don't...

  5. [ubuntu] HP Mini 110 is having weirdness with suspend...

Yeah, suspend problems, totally old hat, right? ;P Well, refreshingly, suspend actually WORKS on this laptop in Karmic after I rolled back to GRUB legacy from GRUB 2 beta. The snag is, X doesn't pop...

[ubuntu] Looking for a widget engine...

...But the name of it escapes me!

I've seen screenshots before of a very basic app that overlays things like system monitors on your desktop and uses a raw text configuration file, but I can't for...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

I used the partition manager on the Ubuntu live CD. Vista was on sda2, which I moved to the front of the drive in order to merge my unformatted space.

Also, I did try both fsck and ntfsfix as you...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

Hrmm... Thanks for the help, but unfortunately this isn't the issue. GRUB comes up fine and lists everything, but when I try to boot Vista, even through the Super Grub Disk, or even by removing GRUB...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

Thank you very much for the constructive comment.
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

Correction: There is no boot.ini in Windows Vista. They replaced it with a big heap of files in the BOOT directory, which I have no experience fiddling with.

So, I reiterate my plea: Help!
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

Err... There isn't one. Unless it's supposed to be under C:\Windows?
  12. [ubuntu] Vista won't boot after filesystem move...

I'm working on a brand new Acer Aspire 6920, installing Ubuntu alongside Vista. The system was set up with the drive partitioned in half already, out of the box, but the Vista partition was in the...

[ubuntu] Trying to setup a VNC server...

    Evenin', Gurus.

So, I run a couple of LTSP servers, one is built on CentOS and has a VNC Server built on it that, when a client connects to it, loads up the GDM login screen. I've been trying to...
  14. [ubuntu] How do I build a VNC server that loads a new session?

    Morning, Gurus.

So, I've got a couple of servers, one running CentOS and one running Ubuntu. This particular CentOS distro comes preconfigured with a VNC server which, when you connect to it,...

[ubuntu] Re: does the server version have a GUI?

Nope, the server installation is just the barest of bare bones. It strips out all the GUI to minimize system resource usage and potential security flaws. You can install the ubuntu-desktop package,...

[ubuntu] Re: What is Ubuntu One?

Hey, that's a novel idea. Unfortunately, seeing as access to these services is probably via HTTP rather than FTP, I'm not sure how feasible it is. And then there's the matter of utilizing all...
  17. [ubuntu] How do I set session startup programs w/o using a GUI tool?

    Hi again, folks.

I'm administrating a high-use LTSP server, and I'm trying to cut back on ram usage by disabling some of the processes that start automatically when users log in to GNOME, but I...

[gnome] Re: Setting the GNOME menu globally.

Thanks, this helps me out a lot. Now, however, this raises another question: The .desktop launcher files list numerous different catagories, which I assume are to indicate which submenus they'll be...

[gnome] Setting the GNOME menu globally.

Is it possible to do this? I'm building an Ubuntu LTSP server for the first time, and while I think using gnome as opposed to IceWM (which we've been using for a long time now) will offer a more...
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Grub can't read RAID array after install.

I may have a new lead on this. If I understand how raid works correctly, the operating system shouldn't need any sort of special drivers to interface with it, because the mirroring is handled in the...
  25. [ubuntu] Re: Grub can't read RAID array after install.

No dice. It just sits there longer, then gives me the same message. This happens after the boot screen though, so GRUB is obviously grabbing the kernel just fine.
