I wondered if the BIOS had been changed by Windows. As you wrote "It didn't" stop me (until I was able to open my laptop by removing a few screws)
Fixing the more than annoyance, the start of the fix was to be remove PC battery and CMOS battery, etc..

My apologies re this old printer. I picked up a cheap laptop recently that is running WIndows 10 and the driver supplied with the Canon printer works OK there.

I've uninstalled Skype and rebooted. Thus far the problem has not recurred.
I've been having the same problem for months and believe that it may be due to having MIcrosoft (ugh) Skype starting up or perhaps Chrome browser.
