  1. [ubuntu] Re: Monitor powering off while watching video

    Bump.
  2. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

Just read all that, and yes it is as we concluded above: you have to first CD to the directory beforehand.

They suggested a workaround like I wrote above - a script to CD first, then execute the...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

And to answer another question you asked me:

Yes, IF you cd to the directory, then run the wine ....exe in a terminal it DOES work.
  4. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

VMC, thank you for persevering with me here, much appreciated.

Hope you saw my last post, we posted at same time as each other.

Running wine ~/home/abcdirectory/abc.exe in a terminal produces...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

    BROADENING SCOPE OF THIS QUESTION

Ok, so it seems there is a bug in Wine and it won't set/keep the path if executed from outside the .exe directory.

So I created this (keeping in mind I have no...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

Tried notepad.exe (has no dependencies) and it works fine, can create launchers everywhere.

In my Googling, found this which tends to imply it is a BUG, although I don't have enough knowledge to...
  7. Re: My brother won't even try Ubuntu or even any linux...

I agree, does it have to be one **or** the other? Can't we all just, err, hold hands and sing kumbaya or something, and just co-exist? :D:D:D
  8. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

Thanks for that, however I still get the same error even introducing "wine /path/exe" to the launcher.

I then tried moving the directory to the Wine "C: drive" and it still didn't work.

    I know...

Re: Install MS Office 2007 on Hardy with WINE

That command won't remove anything, it is changing the owner of those files/directories.

[all variants] Re: Opera 9.5 soon??

For what it's worth, I found 9.5 Beta lacking a bit, so went back to 9.27 and will stay there until next Ubuntu upgrade I guess.
  11. Re: My brother won't even try Ubuntu or even any linux...

But, it is! Linux has come a long way in recent years though*, and Ubuntu is on the right track IMHO, but you still need a certain level of computing knowledge to get it to do what you want.

    Ahhh,...
  12. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

No install, just the .exe and everything it needs is in the directory. There would be no external .dll or anything I believe.
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Help with creating Launcher for application in Wine

As a thought - do I have to move the files from where they are /home/brett123/Documents/ABC/ and put them in some "system directory"???

I'm still stuck in MS Windows habits, and am not used to...

NOT SOLVED YET - I PUSHED THE WRONG BUTTON

I have a unique Windows application, which unfortunately I cannot name here, but please help me if you can.

[ubuntu] Re: laptop get real hot

I too would like to know about this - it seems my laptop is hotter since Ubuntu too. Although I might just be overly sensitive to "possible problems with Linux" at the moment - it's still untrusted...
  16. Re: My brother won't even try Ubuntu or even any linux...

Never try to give advice to adults who haven't asked for it - you'll fail everytime.

My partner, who has his own laptop with Windows, has taken no interest whatsoever in my recent Ubuntu install...
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Have to remove battery to shut down

Couldn't resist... just did CTRL-ALT-BACK to get the system to freeze, then did the suggested ALT-PRINT-R E I S U B and it worked perfectly. Shut down, and rebooted succesfully.

    Someone suggested...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Have to remove battery to shut down

Interesting. To a newbie, this sounds like a classic joke - like sending a new employee to buy striped paint; or a left handed paintbrush.

I did a Google, sorry for doubting you, and found it is...

[ubuntu] Re: Why not make a simliar .exe for ubuntu?

Installing applications is/was one of the hardest things for me to comprehend having come across from Windows. Please don't forget that all mighty advanced users. ;)

    Long message, sorry....

Have Ubuntu/Gnome on notebook with auto login.

When Ubuntu crashes/hangs, the only way I can shut down is to hold down the power button.

Re: Opera users, are you disappointed?

I too used Opera for years and years with Windows, but since my 8-odd weeks now with Ubuntu, it does in fact seem that Opera "is just not right" somehow. Not sure. Can't put my finger on it. But it...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Monitor powering off while watching video

Sorry, I meant there is no suitable settings in those places. I've looked there, but can't find anything that says "don't turn off while watching...".
  23. [ubuntu] Monitor powering off while watching video

Am using Totem Movie Player 2.22.1 (only because it was default, no other reason) to watch videos, however my monitor is powering off after 15 minutes.

I can find no settings in:
    - Totem

"Cube Caps" are the top and bottom of the cube. I could only ever get an image on the top though, but I don't bother now, just prefer to lower the transperancy and have "open" tops and bottoms -...
