I installed 12.10 this past week and everything got detected and worked great. Nvidia video is the only thing that I had issues...
I upgraded to 12.10 recently from 12.04 and everything worked fine including wifi. Was your install fresh 12.10?

I'm in the same boat with my macbook pro. I plug in the headphones and volume is very low. I checked everything and nothing is muted. I can't believe that in 2013 we still can't get things working...

Have you tried Ubuntu 12.04 or Xubuntu? Try and stick with 12.04 for compatibility. That's what I learned.
You may look under the minimal cd install option in the Ubuntu website. There were some commands to type to start the download install from Terminal.

I had to install from the 12.04 livecd minimal cd option because I only had a 650mb CDRW lying around. USB flash drive never worked past the boot screen when loading...
