I did exactly that and it sorted the problems out allowing me to re-install the xfce4-package and with that xfdesktop :) Seems the reason for it going away in the first place was an incompatible...

I don't think it's as much missing dependencies as my system looking for them in all the wrong places. I built Gimp from source a while ago, and it appears to have installed some overrides somewhere...

I experience the same with an Acer Aspire 5551 with a Mobility Radeon HD 4200. Causing a crash is not harder than fullscreening a youtube video or switching between the VTs with a game running.
