Okay, so I envoke my vnc server like so:
tightvncserver :1 -geometry 1280x800 -depth 24
and try to connect with an array of various vnc...
Swapped the cable on sdb, and it was back to full speed :KS
$ sudo mdadm --manage --set-faulty /dev/md0 /dev/sdb
mdadm: set /dev/sdb faulty in /dev/md0
Set the drive to faulty so that sdc could at least rebuild fast...

i had to use dpkg to remove amarok and then the libqtscript4-qtbindings package...

I have been having the same problem... not sure what the cause is. Faulty drivers I would assume, its as if parts of the screen aren't being drawn at all.

yes, but if u read my first post, i said i wanted to use the open driver not the closed one. the reason for this is that it works under linux-rt whereas the fglrx driver doesn't at all.
it turns out that the ATI Radeon HD 3300 chip is 'too' new for xserver 6.9 which is in intrepid. supposedly 6.11+ will support it in jaunty, but im not daring enough to upgrade to alpha6 of that just...
i feel like im just missing one line or something small... any ideas?

that tool never worked for me, it only allows me to configure xserver for my keyboard and never asks for display or graphic settings.

you should be able to tell what version your driver is by opening the nvidia-settings app from the control menu, i know where it is kubuntu only.
i myself use an ati 3200 with the only drivers...
