Re: How many of you completely switched to Linux?

I only keep Windows around for gaming and that's the sole reason I boot it.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is consuming one hell of a lot of my time right now tho :(

    Oh, and before anyone berates...

Re: Becoming system security analyst? How?

The best path IMO would be to try and get a job as a junior sysadmin.

You will get a lot of exposure to the day to day processes of looking after systems, including patching and vulnerability...

    Re: My WGA dilemma

What do you understand by it "being an issue" for you?

That's right, because it looks for an activated Windows installation.

No you don't - just run it through a NAT - Google for a...

    Re: Choice of web servers

There are several issues there that i'm not going to go into, but the probe clearly raised the question of the Defence Department running IIS4 - this predates any advances or improvements inbetween...

    Re: Smoking!

They are indeed private individuals and what they do in private homes is their business - smoking in the home is completely out of the scope of any smoking ban that I know off - the Scottish one...
  7. Re: New software project looking for voluteers to contribute

    Not with you here.

You mean a continuous build system like Cruise Control or just a GUI for make/configure?

    Re: Let's talk partitioning.

    Put it this way.

Place your root filesystem onto a seperate partition from /home.

The next time you screw up a system and reinstall, you will thank me that you can just mount your pre-existing...

    Re: Smoking!

As I say, there is no "liberty" to puff carcinogens into my face in a shared public place and if anyone wants to challenge that or say it's a breach of their human rights to ban smoking, then I...

    Re: Choice of web servers

Not all that interesting - if I remember correctly Akamai are a content delivery network and they deliver content to the client by selecting the nearest media server based on geolocating their IP...

    Re: Smoking!

    *nods*

When I used to live in Glasgow prior to the smoking ban, there was only one pub that prohibited it and even then it only opened a few years ago.

    Re: Smoking!

Sorry, smokers don't actually *have* any rights in this regard.

There is neither a British law nor an EU Directive that gives someone the "right" to blow carcinogenic and toxic smoke in my face.

Poll: Re: Do you like the filesystem hierarchy?

Well no, it's where you find BINaries, just like sbin is where you find System Binaries, var is where you find VARiable files (like logs), proc is where you find information on PROCesses (it's a...

Re: Anyone here living without a car/suv/etc?

I've never owned a car - if I want to go somewhere I walk or if I'm not in the mood (or it;s raining) I take a bus.

Re: Petition - iTunes for Ubuntu

I don't want iTunes or any other DRM software on my system - I can manage my iPod (with Rockbox before anyone pulls me up... :P ) and listen to music just fine without it.

    Re: Why all the CLI?

    One word - feedback.

Re: Where does your email come from?

I took to renting a virtual private server and sticking Debian Testing on it.

It runs Exim, Procmail and Courier-IMAP and does everything I need it to :)

  23. Poll: Re: Who actually uses LTS? Do we need LTS? Does LTS need updates?

I run Dapper on my laptop and XUbuntu on my old laptop as both are aging (P3 and Sempron) and both have crappy graphics cards that aren't up to much (damn you SiS!).

On my server I use Debian Etch...
