I have verizon fios, curious as to why I lose 5-10 Mbps on the upload side while using ubuntu, but i get the full 20/20 in windows.

yes, you can use a different router.
there are some step by step guides for setting up routers with dd-wrt
i would scroll through those options at the bottom... carefully... to see if you can specify output.
and as far as which disc to select... i really don't know, i mean linux seems like a logical...
looks like further in the process you can specify output location

you need the gstreamer ffmpeg plugin pack...
it can be had through the ubuntu software center. applications > ubuntu software center.
