Re: Why is aptitude being removed?

And where would you find this information? This could be from a scenario where X is broken and you want to install the right driver...

That command will just try to install all packages...

Re: Why is aptitude being removed?

Does apt-get provide a ncurses user interface?
Until it does I don't see any reason to remove aptitude from standard.

Re: Why is aptitude being removed?

Even inside X I still prefer aptitude over apt-get and synaptic. It's the only GUI (I consider it so) version of apt which is DE independent AFAIK.
  4. Poll: Re: Discussion: Create Longer Release Cycles for Ubuntu

Right.... try it yourself. Hardy was 2 years ago and a lot of dependencies have changed quite a bit since then and samba digs into quite alot of areas like pam and ldap.

    Anyway that's not the...

Re: Boot speed - between alpha 2 and final

Did you upgrade from alpha-2 all the way to final?

If so, I would suggest a complete re-install. I also upgraded during alpha/beta, but found that after a complete re-install, it was much much...
  6. Poll: Re: Discussion: Create Longer Release Cycles for Ubuntu

Just wanted to give my 2 cents about this.

When I saw the suggestion to increase the LTS window by 1 year, I thought, God No!.

I have an example of why.

Currently we have a Zimbra server...

    Re: a cautionary tale

I think grub put the mbr in the right place. Otherwise it wouldn't show the GRUB error message, right? :)
What kind of controllers do you have? It sounds like that you have multiple controllers...

[SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 beta and Windows 7 no dual-boot

You need to install grub on /dev/sda. It needs to be installed on the Master Boot Record to get the first to boot. Otherwise it's up to the MBR of Windows 7.
  9. Re: Bug filing help again please :^/ Boot time!

I was also a little disappointed about my systems boot speed. But after a complete re-install (the former install was an upgrade from jaunty), it's incredibly fast. I'm quite impressed.
  10. Re: Is there any linux-image-server and other server kernel packages available?

It seems they are not built for i386 anymore.
Perhaps you are looking for linux-generic-pae instead?
  11. Re: Remove pulseaudio without removing ubuntu desktop

The main point of Karmic right now is to beta-test it, not to have a production system. If you want to help this process, file a bug report explaining your problem in details, so the problem can be...
  12. Re: Disable Login Window Prompt Alert Sound in Karmic

One way of disabling it is to uninstall the ubuntu-sounds package :)
  13. Re: Karmic Eclipse 3.5 Won't Create or Import new Projects

Then you have to be in the eclipse folder to execute it.

Anyway the quickfix also seems to fix some other issues aswell (when installing new plugins the list items are invisible).
  14. Re: Karmic Eclipse 3.5 Won't Create or Import new Projects

    Basically it is already reported.
  15. Re: Karmic Eclipse 3.5 Won't Create or Import new Projects

It's a problem with GTK and eclipse.
    Found this bug :
    https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=291257

    Edit:
    a fix is to use

    export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=truebefore launching eclipse.
  16. Re: Karmic Eclipse 3.5 Won't Create or Import new Projects

I'm using the official version and I have the same problem as the original poster. Which version are you using? 3.5.1? I believe it used to work fine in 3.5.0.
  17. Re: Compiz broken with nvidia drivers (which worked before)

You could also just include the patch through dkms...

After you have installed the ppa package and compiled the module, put in your own patch and include it. You can read up on it here :...

Still, I would like to know under which conditions did the poster test the 32-bit version of flash.

Re: Flash in Official PPA in 64bits

Did you try without composite enabled in X? 32-bit flash explicity checks for the composite extension.

Re: Flash in Official PPA in 64bits

That is actually one of the drawbacks of Flash 64-bit, it's not hardware accelerated, which the 32-bit one is. However opengl acceleration is disabled when composite is enabled.

Re: Install initscript= break the sys even more?

You should upgrade udev first. I think the sept 15 issues have been resolved now.
  23. [SOLVED] Re: Installing old proprietary drivers for legacy ATI cards

Oh, yeah also forgot about that. So even if you get the fglrx kernel module to compile/load. X won't allow you allow you to continue.
  24. [SOLVED] Re: Installing old proprietary drivers for legacy ATI cards

You will find that it's quite difficult. The 9.3 doesn't support the latest kernel and will probably never do. Compared to nvidia they don't maintain a legacy driver for older chipsets and keep that...
