I'm having the same problem. Until someone figures it out, I recommend "Places" - "Search for Files" to find stuff.

It works now. I needed to run
compiz --replace
That seemed to take care of it.

I used it to scan my DVD collection to my hard drive - then shipped the physical collection to my parents so I don't have to store it (they didn't mind).

I finally figured out how to do this and am going through and posting the solution to the threads I've been reading for help:
