acroread is not available in the Canonical "partner" repositories in Ubuntu 12.10.

The "Name" field is not activated when "Network" is set to "NAT". I changed NAT to Bridged Adapter and voila! That did the trick.

I don't think you need a key for the partner repositories. Bucky Ball was presumably referring to the Medibuntu key (which I installed).

Enabling the partner repositories did the trick. I find it odd that Medibuntu provides only the 64-bit version of acroread.

According to this page, Medibuntu's acroread in Jaunty is available for the amd64 architecture only, not i386. This seems odd, as acroread has always been available for 32-bit systems.
I solved it following the instructions from a previous comment in the bug report. Just replace qt.conf with the following (for 64-bit Ubuntu):

That's what I did in the end, with only one minor difference: the "plugdev" group was already created (and the ntfs partitions belonged to it).
