Actually the Mint installer is much clearer about how it presents the install actions to the user. The dialogue box design is similar but the is clearly an improvement over Ubuntu.

I figured out why HAL was still starting on my desktop. The mirror I used for my upgrade was out of date, so I ended up getting a beta release.
