What graphic card are you using? I have a simmilar problem with 8.04, after I made an kernel upgrade. It may a problem with drivers for graphic card (I have an Intel graphic card)
I suggest, before updating try using the new version of Ubuntu on Live CD and see if it is working properly. If you have problems, don`t make the update.
