Thanks for your reply, Euroman. You are right about the disallowed characters for MS--I've run into that problem before.

Thanks for your reply, Euroman. You are right about the disallowed characters for MS--I've run into that problem before.
But that's not the issue I'm facing with Windows 7. It's specifically a...
OK, thanks, if you think it will be more likely to get a response here.
Surely it's not uncommon for someone who uses Ubuntu to need to share files with a Windows environment, so I can't be the...
Hi all,
I'm posting this to Absolute Beginners even though I've used Ubuntu for a while, because this seems like a noob-ish question.
My main computer dual boots Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows off...
I'm guessing that the lack of replies suggests that there is no solution for this. Too bad.
Hi,
Sorry in advance for the lengthy post! I want to be really clear about the functionality I'm asking about.
I'm wondering if there is any software available for Ubuntu that allows for...
Solved by simply installing:
aspell
aspell-doc
aspell-en
dictionaries-common
hunspell
hunspell-en-us
Not sure if all of these were necessary, but now it works so I'm happy regardless.
Thanks for the reply, ajgreeny.
I seem to have some libraries installed: libaspell15, libhunspell-1.2-0 and libhunspell-1.3-0. Oops! Could the two versions of libhunspell be a problem?
I...
A while ago I switched from Open Office to Libre Office on a 10.04 machine, but apparently I did something wrong because now my spell check dictionary is gone. This is not just for Libre Office, but...
I should also note, there is no physical switch anywhere on the netbook to turn the antenna back on. :P
My wife's nebook has Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (kernel 2.6.32-33-generic i686), and is using the linux driver for Realtek RTL819x wifi cards. I installed the driver ages ago with:
$ sudo...
emacs is definitely the solution here. Thanks! :)
This might be the problem. I've only done one install of Ubuntu with an encrypted user directory (my traveling netbook). After selecting the encrypted user directory option, I was provided with a...
That probably won't work well for this case, which involves open files.
Often your software will have a built-in feature for periodically saving work in progress. In Open Office, for example,...
Thanks!
I assume there's a simple solution here, but I can't find it.
When I mount a drive in /media (USB drive, truecrypt volume, whatever) a Nautilus file explorer window opens up on my workspace and...
I use a text editor mostly for opening up and editing ascii text files that are used by the programs I write. For example, manually editing comma separated value data files.
I've been using Gedit...
Finally solved.
The Ubuntu kernel does not include the latest driver for the wifi card in this netbook. Newer, working versions of the driver have been available since 2009.
The solution is to...
<tentative cheer>
I think it might be working. I've successfully re-made, installed, and moved the driver. I also added an entry for rt2860sta to /etc/modules
I've booted a couple of times,...
Ahh, I must have been tired too! I did change the first of those, but I neglected to change the second! So, I've changed it now.
And yes, the needed .dat file is in place.
I will re-make...
Rebooted.
~$ dmesg | grep -e ra0 -e rt2
[ 12.649790] rt2860 0000:01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
[ 12.649848] rt2860 0000:01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
~$ lsmod...
OK, this looks promising. I did the revised copy, now:
~$ sudo modprobe rt2860sta
~$ modinfo rt2860sta
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.32-32-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2860sta.ko...
Ha ha, not a problem at all, It happens to me all the time. And thanks again for the help!
So the new instructions worked fine through "make" and "make install" -- bunch of warnings generated but...
Ah, cool. I'll hold off on experimenting on my own until tomorrow!
Thanks so much for all your help so far! You've been outrageously generous. I definitely appreciate it!
Looking over the instructions you linked here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1476007
and looking at your exceptions to the instructions, did you really mean for me to skip step 5...
That's pretty useful.
Here it is:
$ locate rt2860sta.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-28-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko
But "uname -r" returns "2.6.32-32-generic"
