Oddly enough I've fixed the problem on my desktop. It turns out auto login was causing some type of problem. When I turned off auto login, suddenly lightdm would start coming up for me.

It's possible this might be related to the lightdm display manager? I've included the x-0-greeter log file. It seems to have a few errors in it but I'm not sure what to make of them.
