I had enuff..... i ended up recompiling my kernel setting the serial as a module and just made sure that lirc_serial was loaded first... VOILA!!!!!!!! On reboot lirc up an running no problem.

I have ubuntu working as a DDNS server.. and there is no extra hardware in my mix . I can ping hostname and IP address effortlessly. The method described above seems to get the job done no problem....
