Just FYI - the problem came back after one of the recent updates.
Running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
Got me squared away again.
Ok, fixed that problem too.
/etc/X11/default-display-manager
had lightdm instead of /usr/sbin/lightdm
Hope this helps someone else.
This seemed to work:
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates-dev
sudo shutdown -r now
By work, I mean it still reboots to a command line but at least now I can...
