[ubuntu] Re: Copying from/to USB Drive to HDD very slow!

What is the best way to 'format' my Kingston USB drive to properly test the transfer rate do you think? I know it's not going to be 100% accurate as if I were using a new unused thumb drive (because...

[ubuntu] Re: Copying from/to USB Drive to HDD very slow!

[ubuntu] Re: Copying from/to USB Drive to HDD very slow!

    It's a Kingston 16GB FAT32 and I need to correct myself here - it's USB 2.0.

I must admit, I'm using the old copy and paste way and not the terminal. I will try what you have suggested and let you...

  6. [ubuntu] Re: Firefox browser sluggish, crawled to a halt not letting me scroll down the page

So is this a completely new install, or am I just installing another desktop environment?

    EDIT: It's okay I found this http://askubuntu.com/questions/64241/how-do-i-switch-to-xubuntu
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Firefox browser sluggish, crawled to a halt not letting me scroll down the page

From what I have read (but haven't tried yet), Xubuntu is not that much quicker as it seems to be getting just a bulky as Ubuntu. Is this right or wrong?

Also, I may have made a school boy error!...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Sllooowwww

Might look into Xubuntu. I have gnome desktop environment installed on Ubuntu so I could have logged into that instead and tried. Never gave it a thought!

Yeah I think there is a lot of Flash...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Sllooowwww

Ok my laptop is a HP with an Intel Dual Core CPU, and it's about 4 years old. It has about 1GB of RAM and (i think...or it could be 2, I'll have to check) and has only Ubuntu 13.10 installed on it....
  10. [ubuntu] Firefox browser sluggish, crawled to a halt not letting me scroll down the page

I was using Firefox in Ubuntu 13.10 to do my online shopping. It was so painful. The browser crawled to a halt not letting me scroll down the page, then the rest of the system decided to just stop! I...

    Re: Sharing

Wow, i feel fairly stupid now lol.

I guess the next question is, how do i sort this out? Is it just a case of assigning permissions to each user's folder to deny access??

    Re: Sharing

    Thanks for the reply TheFu.

So if i give the folder i want to share, the correct permissions, how does the other user find that folder? Users can't access other user's profiles can they?

    Shutdown / Sytem button missing!

I've been tinkering with Ubuntu 13.10 and after installing the Skype Wrapper noticed that the icon at the top right of the screen (the gear icon) was missing. I'm very new to Linux so I'm not sure...
