A good work around is to build a new wireless driver with compat wireless using the bleeding edge package:

I thought I would have to buy a USB...
Joe,
On the Star 1, I got my wireless working well with a Debian based distro (crunchbang) by downloading the "bleeding edge" package of Compat Wireless from: ...
It's hard for me to talk bad about System 76 - they have treated me well in the customer service department.
I've had my Starling for a little over a year.
For my Starling:
1) It started...
I figured they would just suggest to buy a new battery.
I agree with what you said - it just isn't worth 1/3 of the price of a new netbook to have a new battery.
I guess you get what you pay...
vttay03,
I'm curious how you resolve this. I have the exact same problem, and my computer was purchased about the same time (Sept. 09). I took pretty good care of the battery, but maybe not...
For those of us on here that want to use a System 76 Starling with the rtl8187 wireless driver issue (Star 1 for sure) with another OS (since the System 76 driver can't be run on another OS), I found...
Thanks for the reply. I was having problems getting any command to recognize the card, so I'm glad it wasn't just me.
I was debating getting a USB wireless device. I thought I would exhaust...
Is the Starling Star1 wireless card an rtl8187, or an 8187b, or something else?
Is there a terminal command to run to see what card is installed?
Has anybody successfully fixed the Star1 short...
I had to send mine for a repair under warranty also. Talked with Tom.
I'm surprised System 76 hasn't said to contact them about this (if it is under warranty).
I'm sure Tom will be here helping you shortly.
I had this problem. One of the first trouble shooting things you'll want to try is to blow the vents / air intakes out with a can of compressed air....

Hope that helps.
I'm assuming this is a video you have viewed successfully in VLC before?
Have you tried to view it in other movie players successfully?
Have you installed any other software recently?
Tom,
Thanks for responding.
When I originally posted, I was using the newest version of Skype (whatever # that was 3 weeks or so ago), and 9.10 regular Ubuntu.
I can't give much...
I don't know if there is a specific guide to show you, but Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu Netbook Remix should all work well.
Xubuntu is supposed to be lighter on resources. I don't think the...
That's pretty awesome. I still keep a Mac for my desktop, so I don't need to run OS X on my Starling.
I didn't even think Half-Life would work on the hardware a Starling has. That's pretty...
Did you ever get this to work?
Yeah, sometimes updates might fix little glitches.
Let me know if it works.
You're welcome.
I don't think it is a hardware issue with your laptop.
You might want to run some available updates on your Ubuntu to see if a software update fixes the problem. Do the...
I'm actually using Linux Mint right now, but if I remember Ubuntu correctly, you should be able to right click on the panel at the bottom and select "add to panel." Try adding, I believe, the...
Have you tried unplugging the power adapter and re-plugging it in to see if the icon comes back?
I had this same problem. Although, the only thing I could connect my problem to was that I installed the Enlightenment DE and then uninstalled it (through Synaptic). Then Gnome was broke.
I...
Tom,
I'm glad you brought this up. It is a point of major curiosity that the distribution I have been playing with seems to do wireless just fine. Granted, I don't go beyond say 40 feet from my...
I think the original poster brought up some good points, and verified some insight that I have had into cloud computing.
I'm unsure why there seemed to be so many attacks on degarb regarding his...
