I found a set of instructions for someone using Mint who was having this problem and tried those.

Okay, I hooked the TV up and booted the laptop. I get no response from the TV, but I get a blank screen from the laptop which persists until I unplug the hdmi cable, whereupon I get the desktop.

Okay, that's not something I've tried. I'll try that.
When I first connect the HDMI cable, there's no response from either the laptop or the TV.
There's a NO INPUT on the TV that scrolls down the screen. It produces no sound or picture.
If the laptop...
Is there anything else you need?

I don't really know what I'm doing.
The laptop is a stock Dell Studio 1555.
Going through some other messages gave me these command structures:
lspci -vk | grep -iA20 vga
xrandr
cat...
I know the TV works because when I hook a Windows machine up to it with the HDMI cable, I can mirror the screen and play videos on it.
I'd just like to do the same thing with my Linux laptop. It...
Still a further update:
I got into the BIOS and discovered there actually *was* a way to select a USB drive, and changed the boot order. I formatted the entire disk and installed fresh, so I can now...
Further update:
After trying to mount the 500 gb partition mentioned above and failing, I finally decided if I couldn't get at it, it wasn't worth trying to save.
I then tried to format it, and got...
Update:
I managed to find an Ethernet cable and hooked it up to the laptop. I think I fixed the problem I had with the wireless (although I have not yet tested it).
The problem with the available...
Always a bit of one to overdo it, I disconnected every cable, removed the battery, and then let it sit overnight like that.
I reinstalled the battery and the power cord and then started up the...
Okay...!
I have a Dell Studio 1555. I installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on it.
Somewhere along the way, it seems to have become a broken install.
It currently boots up with the message: "The volume...
Thank you for nurse-maiding me through that. I very much appreciate it.
~$ uname -i

Okay, Im not sure what this tells me.
~$ lscpu

CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit
Byte Order: Little Endian

From the command line, is there a command for finding out how many bits my system uses? Is it a 32-bit machine / OS or is it a 64-bit machine / OS?
Thanks in advance!

I've noticed it, too, when I start my Minecraft server. No idea what stack guard is or what it does. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to feed the command line in place of <libfile>, unless it's that...
So, if grub boots using the iso file and this snippet, that means grub needs to be installed, right? Or does that snippet tell the system how to use the iso without actually installing Ubuntu?
Is...
Okay. For the sake of closure.
I will be studying these responses to learn from them, btw.
I swear I took my meds today.
I have two machines, side by side. The Windows machine is a...
I suspect this'll be an easy question for someone. I'm not a total beginner, but I lost all my notes on how to do things in Linux, and I need help again.
I have an old (small) hard drive that's...
I think as soon as I installed console-data, the installer ran it automagically. This means I have my pipe symbol again.
I went with lubuntu, and frankly, it's sort of sold me on installing it on...
When I used Minimal CD it offered various packages to install. I picked Xubuntu, but I guess it didn't work.
Apparently I also chose the wrong keyboard, because I can't type the pipe symbol now. I...
For a lack of media, I was forced to use a CD to install with.
The only CD-size install of Ubuntu I could find was Ubuntu Minimal CD.
I am installing on an old Inspiron 6000.

I have X (gnome) up, so Ive been using whatever updater comes with that. I can use the terminal, since the commands are well-known. This version also comes with Synaptic, so I suppose I could also...
Still the same error during update.
I tried checking for updates, and I get this instead, over and over:
