  1. [ubuntu] Re: How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

The next set of things I've done:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

    This gave me an error:
    Cannot add PPA:...

  3. [ubuntu] Re: How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

Okay, I hooked the TV up and booted the laptop. I get no response from the TV, but I get a blank screen from the laptop which persists until I unplug the hdmi cable, whereupon I get the desktop.

  4. [ubuntu] Re: How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

Okay, that's not something I've tried. I'll try that.
  5. [ubuntu] Re: How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

When I first connect the HDMI cable, there's no response from either the laptop or the TV.
There's a NO INPUT on the TV that scrolls down the screen. It produces no sound or picture.
    If the laptop...

  7. [ubuntu] Re: How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

    I don't really know what I'm doing.
The laptop is a stock Dell Studio 1555.

Going through some other messages gave me these command structures:
lspci -vk | grep -iA20 vga

  8. [ubuntu] How do I make this laptop work with an HDMI cable?

I know the TV works because when I hook a Windows machine up to it with the HDMI cable, I can mirror the screen and play videos on it.
I'd just like to do the same thing with my Linux laptop. It...
  9. [SOLVED] Re: Broken Ubuntu 16.04 install on Dell Studio 1555 (want to upgrade to Ubuntu 18)

    Still a further update:
I got into the BIOS and discovered there actually *was* a way to select a USB drive, and changed the boot order. I formatted the entire disk and installed fresh, so I can now...

    Further update:
After trying to mount the 500 gb partition mentioned above and failing, I finally decided if I couldn't get at it, it wasn't worth trying to save.
I then tried to format it, and got...
  11. [SOLVED] Re: Broken Ubuntu 16.04 install on Dell Studio 1555 (want to upgrade to Ubuntu 18)

    Update:
I managed to find an Ethernet cable and hooked it up to the laptop. I think I fixed the problem I had with the wireless (although I have not yet tested it).
    The problem with the available...
  12. [SOLVED] Re: Broken Ubuntu 16.04 install on Dell Studio 1555 (want to upgrade to Ubuntu 18)

Always a bit of one to overdo it, I disconnected every cable, removed the battery, and then let it sit overnight like that.
I reinstalled the battery and the power cord and then started up the...
  13. [SOLVED] Broken Ubuntu 16.04 install on Dell Studio 1555 (want to upgrade to Ubuntu 18)

    Okay...!
I have a Dell Studio 1555. I installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on it.
Somewhere along the way, it seems to have become a broken install.
It currently boots up with the message: "The volume...

[SOLVED] command-line question (number of bits)

From the command line, is there a command for finding out how many bits my system uses? Is it a 32-bit machine / OS or is it a 64-bit machine / OS?

    Thanks in advance!

[SOLVED] Re: old dying hard drive transfer to new hard drive
