    [ubuntu] Re: rhythmbox quit on X

    You can do it by fiddling with the icon settings in the configuration preferences. I have mine set to "Always Visible", and it seems to work the way we are talking about here.

    [ubuntu] Re: converting sound for xbox

    It would help if you provide a little more specific information regarding the files. If you are trying to convert x264 .mkv files for the XBox 360, then you can just use Avidemux. Copy the video,...

    Re: Linux From Scratch

    I think I would definitely recommend Arch over Gentoo in your particular situation. Both will give you similar results, but with Gentoo you will be waiting forever to compile all the programs,...

    Re: Linux From Scratch

    Yeah, I have to agree here. I think LFS on that older rig would be a lesson in frustration and futility more than anything else, unless you are extremely patient. You might try either Ubuntu...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Convert HD .mkv movie to Xbox compatible .avi

    I just use Avidemux to convert the x264.mkv files for the xbox. The settings I use:

    Video -> copy
    Audio -> AAC, stereo
    Container -> mp4

    File name must be .mov for the XBox360 to play it....
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Converting wav to mp3 with lame. I don't get the basics...

    Sound Converter just uses lame to convert to mp3. Just edit the mp3 instructions to whatever you want in the "preferences" menu.

    [ubuntu] Re: Need Some Help With Audio Encoding

    Well, for the few times I have done things like this, I have just used Avidemux to change the video, and Audacity to change the audio. I usually had to time shift the audio by -150 milliseconds to...

    [ubuntu] Re: Need Some Help With Audio Encoding

    Can't you just use Avidemux for that? Under the Audio tab select Film to Pal conversion, or have you tried that already?

    [ubuntu] Re: Need Some Help With Audio Encoding

    What exactly are you trying to do? What format is the video in? What are you trying to change it to? What format is the audio?... Perhaps some more info on codecs and containers.

    [ubuntu] Re: Need Some Help With Audio Encoding

    You can use Audacity to change the tempo of the audio track without changing it's pitch. Save the new audio file, and add it back to the video. I have had to do this a few times with some of my...

    Check to make sure that you have set static IP addresses for the XBox and your PC. Sometimes they keep stealing the same IP address if you leave them as dynamic IP's.

    Re: Gnome or KDE

    You can have them both installed on your system. You can then just choose which Desktop Environment at the login screen.

    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop will install kubuntu.

    [ubuntu] Re: Canon Pixma iP1600 driver

    The script error from the rpm to deb conversion is likely the problem. Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu?
