download and compile:
alsa-driver-1.0.18.tar.bz2

with ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel...

Hey, guys. I too run Ubuntu 8.10 on HP mini 1000 (STAC92xx audio). Instead of running usual install, i chose alternate CD (command line system), then installed Xorg, wmii and so on. Problem == sound....
