I agree with you my friend. I have been using Gnome-shell on and off for a couple of years now and I just compiled the new layout.... I really had higher expectations... Development in Gnome-shell...
I meant the majority of experienced users who give support on the forums generally don't recommend upgrades. I know Canonical mention how to do upgrades.... But like I said... it is hit or Miss. And...
It is Also Not recommended to upgrade Ubuntu. Sure you can do it... done it plenty times myself... but it is hit or miss. Configs get screwed up often, Desktop behaviour can get weird and some things...
I applaud Clem from LinuxMint to reject Unity and Gnome-shell at this time. Unity is garbage in it's current state (in my opinion) maybe it will get better? maybe it will always suck.... who knows......

There won't be an official update to fix this problem... Because plymouth/Kms don't support proprietary nvidia drivers... The devs for plymouth/kms will have to work something out with the Nvidia...

plymouth/kms works great with nouveau... but the problem is nouveau just plain sucks! its not even at the point where it can support compiz! forget about...

ok... ubuntu 10.04 is installed... proprietary nvidia drivers are installed, nouveau driver is blacklisted via /etc/modbrobe/blacklist.conf
all is sweet... i can use my nvidia...

You CAN change from metacity to gnome-shell and back again currently, although its a bit dodge....
gnome-shell --replace to turn Gnome-shell on
metacity --replace is a bit dodge to turn it back...
