Sorry I never got back to you; for the benefit of anyone else who might search for this, the problem no longer exists in the 8.10 releases of Ubuntu and it's different variants. Thread closed.
I've had the same problem with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu cds, both the 32- and 64-bit versions. Has anyone come up with a definitive answer to this?
This might be helpful; worked for me. Go into System Settings, click the advanced tab, then Service Manager. Stop the "Detecting RANDR (Monitor changes)" service. Worked for me.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04. For some reason, I can put the laptop to sleep fine, but when I try to wake it up, the power light comes on, but that's it. No HDD...
Same thing as Sand Lee. Once I switched to 64-bit Ubuntu, it doesn't even get warm anymore
