I often get this problem, used debian for a long time and always had this problem with gnome, now I have been getting it with ubuntu, both 10.10 and 11.04
Try doing sudo apt-get install nautilus
what is the iso of exactly?
you can enable a root terminal and use that to do the tasks that you need to perform
pretty sure I saw this issue on IRC, i think changing the font fixed the problem for the person experiencing it
I suggest i3 too, by far the best solution imo

try reinstalling your drivers through jockey-gtk
the "equivalent" to windows task manager would be system monitor which is located in system - administration - system monitor

Try installing it via the command line, with the command "sudo apt-get install packagename"
have you done any upgrades for this to happen?
From what I have seen in other threads, installing the drivers should work
Apart from the upgrade have you changed anything? like any of your hardware? also did you get any errors with the upgrade?
If it is not in the repositories at the moment you can either wait until it is, or compile it yourself
