The fixed webcam on my Acer Aspire 5685 (Logitech Orbicam) is faulty, and can cause long boots, 'power manager' errors on login, and wireless network connectivity issues after resuming from standby....
I will double check, (when I have another spare day) but I think the state of play currently is this;
Both the nvidia driver and the open source drivers obtain the same EDID.
All open source...
Excellent. Yet another nvidia resolution problem marked 'solved' after buying new hardware.
I don't blame you, mind. If your computer cannot drive your monitor, it doesn't matter what the rest of...
I've just been playing with Debian, and it appears (like Ubuntu) to be happier on the laptop.
I've just posted this to Debian Bugs (673669):-
"I booted my laptop from the live CD with the CRT...
I don't blame you for the confusion, and thanks again for your time.
Like I said, I'm loathe to install the nvidia driver and call it a solution - despite ultimately probably wanting to use it. I...
Is that method valid for the open-source drivers?
Ok, so I have the file -
$ cat monitor.edid
&@!'
(WJ&HL?eOOT
Just to let you know, I am using the proprietary nvidia driver on my laptop, which (up...
I have ubuntu 10.04 installed on the laptop and it appears read-edid is already intalled. Running the command you asked gave -
~$ sudo get-edid > monitor.edid
get-edid: get-edid version 2.0.0
...
Good news - I'm posting from my laptop booted with the 1204 live cd, with the CRT plugged into the VGA - with two desktops and a visible terminal
Bad news - The unity task bar (on the left) utterly...

I cannot believe how many people experiencing similar problems over many distros. Most are 'solved' by using different hardware, giving up, or in the case of the proprietary driver you can force an...
That's strange. I've never seen that resolution before. I have just double checked the available resolutions in XP and the closest one is 1600x1200.
I need to look into (or be helped) creating an...
Right. I'm back, and I'm not giving up until -
a) I have a functional workaround
b) This issue is acknowledged as a bug, and someone in the know is attempting to fix it.
Regarding b), is there...
Thanks for popping back.
I have obtained the edid info from windows using the phoenix app. It gave a warning about some version incompatibility, and that the edid info would/could be altered...

Sorry, I guess I was asking the same question in two ways.
I'm struggling to generate a new xorg.conf. In order to run Xorg -configure, one needs to stop the GUI. Took me a while to realise it's...
Is your monitor driven correctly with the open-source driver? Can you select the appropriate resolutions and refresh rates?
Without wanting to sound like a troll, I cannot believe Windows has not suffered from being unable to read the EDID yet Linux has suffered this for 5+ years.
I have had this issue ever since my...
There appears to be a lot of EDID related problems surfacing recently - I imagine many people aren't sure why their machines don't work with recent linux distros. It's by no means limited to Ubuntu....
As for trying the proprietary drivers, is that not what Ubuntu is doing without the 'nomodeset' flag?
So sorry, it is a DVI to VGA (rather than RGB) adapter that I am using (never been very good with video TLAs) - made by XFX I believe.
Monitor is an iiyama vision master pro 510, card is an nvidia...
Many of the modelines appear to be set at 0.0 Hz
The monitor is very capable (120Hz at the lower resolutions) - one of the reasons I haven't thrown it yet.
Here goes - this is the xorg.0.log from a failed boot, obtained using ssh.

Would any of you EDID / Xorg experts be able to assist? I have a similar problem only with an nvidia card and a CRT monitor.
