Regarding the startup time. I suppose that you have heard of the open office quickstarter applet? You can find it in Synaptic (Universe I think). It sits on your panel and really speeds the startup...
No password. You have to use sudo before the command or sudo -s to get the root console (your own password).
It is possible to "activate" the root user if you wish.

BWF89: Until recently they had SuSE in a dual boot config but now they are "all XP". I'm introducing Linux slowly and hopefully they will use it when they are old enough to choose :-)
I haven't used windows for years on my box. My kids use XP for gaming (on another computer).
