I just noticed something.
If I log-in as "Guest", Gnome works fine.
If I log-in as myself, the bottom panel is not working, except for the "workplace switcher".
That is driving me nuts, because,...
Thanks for the time !
However, I cannot get a menu from the top (or the bottom) panel; I can drag icons in them, that's it.
I just upgraded to 12.10 OTA; didn't change a thing !
Dunno what to do
Disregard my last post; I can log-in again (permissions on .Xauthority)
But my initial problem remains.
Still no bottom panel.
Yep, Thanks !!!
.Xauthority was owned by root and not by me; it just took a chown.
Appreciate it.
I was trying to fix a bottom panel problem, ran "Tweaks" and now I cannot log-in.
I get to the login window, select my account, enter my pw, screen goes dark for a few seconds and I am back at...
BAD NEWS: I cannot log-in; I get to the login window, select my account enter my pw, screen goes dark for a few seconds and I am back at the log-in window !!!
I believe it is better to start a...
I didn't remove it ;-)) It disappeared a couple weeks ago !!!
Actually not quite, I still have the "Workspaces"
OK. I think there are other issues here. I just tried on my other machine which has an identical configuration and the ALT+MENUKEY works.
Also, I notice I am missing the icon on the bottom left:...
Not working either.
Please note that I am not using Unity, but the Gnome Desktop.
Thanks anyway for taking the time !
Tried all combinations of clicks and mod. keys; nothing happens.
However when I go to "System tools>Preferences>Display" I get the Error box:
Failed to execute child process...
There it is:

I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 for a year on my Lenovo laptop.
A few weeks ago, doing nothing unusual, I noticed the bottom bar was blank; the minimized windows didn show, even after reboots.
I...
I don't really know how to say it, so I'll give an example.
I have a list of files in a directory that are named "PICT100xxxx.jpg", starting at "PICT1000100.jpg", and ending at "PICT1002661.jpg"....
THANKS !!! That's exactly what I want to do. I need to get more familiar with "find"; the man page scared me ;-)
Looks like it would do part 1. Thanks !
Still need a way to pick files in many different directories and copy them to a single directory.
Hi,
Not really an pure Ubuntu question, but members here are so knowledgeable.
I am running 12.04 precise
I have approximately 3-4000 photos spread over 30-40 directories with no particular...
SOLVED ! Finally.
I spent many hours fiddling with all the settings I could find to no effect.
So I thought maybe I should learn Unity (after 7 years using Gnome) so I logged in Unity; I really...
Thanks for the quick reply.
However, it didn't work :-(:(
I went to the gnome-tweak-tool and then to shell, found the toggles for date, seconds, week, but it didn't do anything ! I logged out and...
Just upgraded to Precise.
Got everything running my way ... almost; still a few (very) minor questions.
I cannot stand Unity, so I am running Gnome (used it since Fiesty)
Question:
How do I get...
Found something that might be interesting:
- if I boot with Kernel 2.6.38-8, I have no problems.
- if I boot with 2.6.38-10, the zombies attack the CPU.
So I am staying with Kernel 2.6.38-8,...
OK, I can reproduce the problem easily: if I reboot the cpu's have normal load; if I plug my cell phone in the USB port, the kworker's grab 100% of cpu every 2-4 seconds for 2-3 seconds (looks like a...
Thanks, I'll need it !!!
However, I still have 8-10 "kworker" in the process list; they don't use any resources but they are there. My other Lenovo which run pretty much the same configuration...
NO, NO !!!
They are not "zombie processes" in the strict sense.
I referred to the "kworker" as zombies as a "joke" because they are hard to kill and keep coming back. :D
Sorry for the confusion !
Found something !
Ran "Powertop" again (as root).
The first option it gives after it runs for a few seconds about "power save" (just can't remember exactly) worked.
It didn't kill the kworker...
