I can confirm this behaviour with my laptop with onboard Intel graphics.
Resolution defaults on boot to 1024x768 in both in GDM and desktop.
Only happened after updating to Kernel 3.8.0-13.

yes I have an Acer laptop and I simply added:
setpci-s 00:02.0 F4.B=40
to /etc/rc.local (which needs to be opened as root)
and brightness is automatically set at desired setting at each boot...
Nvidia v96.xx legacy driver currently not compatible with xorg 1.9 in Ubuntu 10.10.
Until nvidia come up with an updated driver, users of old nvidia legacy cards are stuck for the timebeing.

Even so, I do think it's pretty bad when Ubuntu extols the virtues of being eminently suitable for older hardware and yet this problem recurs almost...
It's just a shame that there wasn't any forewarning before upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 that Xorg 1.9 is not compatible with the nvidia v96.xx legacy driver and therefore broke my upgrade requiring me...
Try opening Camorama using this command in the terminal:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so camorama

Webcam has always worked fine for me using Fn+F2...both in cheese and Skype

Thanks for the info re wireless for this netbook. All up and running pretty much out of the box with Jaunty.
However, like you, I cant get the onboard speakers to work...tried everything...
ok running Ubuntu 8.10...Totem....BBC plugin.....Takes ages to initialise then bombs out saying it cant connect to server.Do you think this is BBC- specific or a totem bug?
This happening on all 3...

Java DOES work in Google Chrome, you just have to download and install the latest version of Java for windows from here:

I have tried it in XP and I like it a lot, however, right now, Java does not work.

There appears to be an authentication issue with checkgmail which, upon start up, wont recognise my user name and password. It worked fine up until yesterday.
Is anybody else having this problem...
You will also note high cpu usage when opening the appearance pref and attempting to change themes, fonts etc.
There is a fix in the proposed updates repository.
Just open synaptic then updates...
