You could also try WinFF and Avidemux.
On your desktop go to Settings (cog icon at the top right of the screen) and click Startup Applications. Click Add, and enter the program name and command to start knemo. Click Add to add to the list...
For the battery icon, check System -> Administration -> Power management -> General tab
and check that "Always display an icon" is selected.
Have you tried purging it without including the version number? E.g.:
sudo apt-get purge skype
I have just had the "no battery present" message on my Netbook but after I took the battery out then reinserted it, it's working again. You've probably already tried it, but just in case you haven't.
Hello Ian,
I'm glad you found a distro that works with the hardware and that you like. The reason Skype isn't in the repositories is that it is proprietary software. You can just download the...
You could, but perhaps the 3D graphics isn't the culprit, it is just one possibility. Does the total freezing stop when you use Unity 2D?
It might be a video or hardware related issue. What hardware are you running it on? Is it a desktop with a dedicated graphics card (eg. Nvidia) that supports 3D, or does it use shared onboard...
For older, low-spec hardware, you could try these distributions, which are less resource-hungry than the standard ubuntu or kubuntu:
Xubuntu (uses XFCE desktop environment)
Lubuntu (uses LXDE...
You might want to try installing Zinio reader under Wine. It's worth a try anyway:

I have the Samsung N140 and apparently it can come with either an Atheros or a Realtek wireless chip. Atheros works out of the box but the Realtek chip needs the windows driver via Ndiswrapper. Might...
Actually, in Ekiga I don't think the camera preview in the video settings always works. Could be a bug. I click "Detect device" and it doesn't do anything either. It is recognized though. Try...
Could you also try with Skype and Ekiga?
According to this website, your webcam is made by Bison Electronics (Vendor ID 5986). It might be supported by the UVC driver, see list of supported Bison webcams, although your product model...
Good idea, forgot about that. Sysabod, could you also attach the output of the command
dmesg as suggested by no2498?
Thanks for the attachments. So it seems the laptop is a Haier T6 series notebook from a (Chinese) vendor called Haier Computers, is that correct? I must admit I have never heard of them before :)...
It's possibly the first entry, not sure, but before I try to hunt down the model according to the IDs from the lsusb command, please also post the output of
lspci just in case, plus the output for ...
Please paste the output of the lsusb command here. You can do that by copy-and-pasting it from the terminal. This will give us information on the make and model of your webcam, so we can see what...
Many built-in webcams are connected to the usb bus. If yours is, you can enter this command to find out the make, model and ID:
lsusb
Smplayer is also pretty good.
Try Teamviewer - it's available for linux and windows and does not need any port forwarding in firewalls. Good if you need to give someone remote help fast.

Good, there's been progress with the video then :) As for the sound problem, check out the following thread, and its links/suggestions:

There seem to be a few threads with this "Disconnected: connection refused" problem lately - I'm not sure why it is happening but it seems to be affecting the default Movie Player program (Totem)?...
Ok, so the Ricoh card reader uses chipset R5C822:
02:05.1 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 22)
I've trawled the Internet for threads, and it seems...
