Go into your sound settings and make sure the proper output is selected. I just reinstalled and had the same thing.

Sorry to hear about your failed upgrade. I would burn a 14.04 disk then boot off of it and copy the documents that you need to a thumb drive or NAS. Then do a clean install of 14.04.

I'm using Steam under Ubuntu 14.04 and have had no issues.

This has been around for years and has been a false positive for that long. You could try rkhunter and see what it shows, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing to worry about.

You can do that but if your PC can boot from a USB stick. then you can use http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and not need to burn a DVD.

YUM isn't used by Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses APT. bzlib.h is part of bzip2 which should already be installed. Try installing it again and see what happens.


sudo apt-get install bzip2

Be sure that your time is correct. A Google search on "The OCSP response is not yet valid (contains a date in the future)" returns others with the same problem.

I'm confused. Was your internet working before? The IPs that you listed are internal IPs. Are you on a router?

I must be lucky because I run Unity 3D, Gnome Shell and Cinnamon with an Nvidia 430GT and 295.40, just fine.

I also removed Unity like sammyboy. No doom and gloom here. I'm using Gnome-shell and Cinnamon.

IMPORTANT: Before you remove Unity...make sure that you have Gnome-Shell or Cinnamon installed first.

Open a terminal and type:


cinnamon --replace

You could try running it under Virtual Box. From a Google search, it seems that what most people do. There's also MuseScore, which may have what you need and there's a Linux version.

I'm assuming that you want to edit these files. All you're doing is just typing in the PATH to files and not doing anything.

If you want to edit them...try:


sudo gedit...

Install CCSM (CompizConfig Setting Manager). Click on Window Management on left side. Click "Place Windows", then "Placement Mode". Choose centered from the drop down. Make sure you enable it.

Install Ubuntu Tweak and look under Window Manager Settings.

It's a nice distro but there's still a mix of French and English, which I find frustrating since I chose English during the install. There's suppose to be a patch to fix this.

Do you have an external USB HDD attached? If you do...unplug it and try booting again.

Did you check to see what fonts are set in Preferences>Appearance>Fonts?

Right-click on the panel. Choose Add to Panel. Scroll down and choose Indicator Applet Complete. Right-click on the applet to move it to where you want...:D
