    Part of the problem is solved. If I hover over one of the offending file names without selecting it, a pop-up window will reveal the entire path name. At least now I can delete the file(s).

    Perhaps I should have said that this is persistent behaviour. Unfortunately, I don't think a re-boot will provide a long-term solution.
