For GTK themes, don't unzip anything ( they usually come as tar.gz ). Open Theme manager ( Desktop settings ) and click Install - browse to your newly downloaded theme file ( .tar.gz ) and select it...
Actually, there is .. KDE uses KDE applications and GNOME uses GNOME applications. They are not identical and some things may differ ( though, nothing too big to confuse you ;) ).

I would suggest you to install mysql-admin and restore your database from there. phpMyAdmin is good only if you need to create/delete/populate databases, not to restore/backup them ;)
