The original GNU GRUB 0.97 features no "relative path". So thats no problem. You should just edit your menu.lst and let it work in your way.
Try once more(and the last time). Use your Windows explorer to search the whole drive for menu.lst and copy it to the root folder of your C: , then reboot and select ubuntu.
