  1. [ubuntu] Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows via BIOS, not GRUB (2 harddrives)

    Hello,

I don't want Windows to show up in GRUB because the only reason I'll ever want to use it is if I have a seasonal (winter) hankering for Civ 5. Currently I have Ubuntu on an SSD and a 1TB HD...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Well... disappointed this time. Now I tried installing over my last install, but that didn't fix anything while making my LAMP server and Minecraft cease to function correctly. I'll use my Lubuntu...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

I still have the issue. I installed Lubuntu so I could access my main user with a DM that's working. I actually love Unity though, and I would appreciate any further help. :KS
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Dino. I tried the dconf reset command again. It doesn't work. I get

    error: Error spawning command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=6e7f04a39ef9b1268709e5a25132289e --binary-syntax --close-stderr':...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

When pq recommended adding the terminal session as an option, did desktop entity mean something like "unity" or did it mean literally desktop entity with the brackets?
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

    Dino99, no idea. :)
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Grah, there is no line that says initrd.lz in my grub. There is a line with initrd (but no lz). It also isn't the line with quiet splash after it.

    For
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Oh, I found an article that says Unity no longer uses dconf. Is that an issue with the command? Going to Grub like you said... will report.
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Grah~ I went to the terminal from the logon screen and simply logged in without a DM, so that part works. I don't use GRUB btw or don't know how to get there because I don't have another OS.
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

The compiz reset command said "error spawning command line... reset a key or dir. -f is required for dirs" I would type out the whole thing, but I'm on a Kindle Fire to post here.

    I tried all your...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

Thanks dino99. However, I cannot open a terminal since keyboard shortcuts are not doing anything, and I can't su from a terminal on guest since guest doens't have privledges.
  12. [ubuntu] Upgraded 12.10 to 13.04 and system is not working after login

I upgraded to 13.04 from 12.10 yesterday--far too excited to remember to test with a live CD. :) So... everything looks fine up to the login screen, and then I log in. The system is "unresponsive"....
  13. [all variants] Re: fpanel difficult to set up via motherboard manual

Thank you VERY much, Cheesemill. I appreciate the help.
  14. [all variants] fpanel difficult to set up via motherboard manual

I know this isn't strictly Ubuntu, but it's for a server that will be Ubuntu and you are my favorite people. If this is inappropriate, let me know, but I didn't see anything against it in the...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

My computer ran fine all night and into today. Looked at the hours since I noted stability, and kern.log showed no more "mtrr_cleanup: can not find optimal value" or the memory error it was listing...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

3 hours stable... if I have to use 8 GB, it's a shame, but really that's plenty. I'm not a gamer but a programmer, so I think most my strength will be from having my first SSD. I'll peek back...
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

Another thought: Looking up ACPI, I saw that it's about power management, and I remembered that my tiny case has a 300 watt power supply. Since I have no CD drive, an SSD, and a third gen i5, I...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

I started to open my computer and realized that there is really nothing to disconnect in your instructions besides the mouse and one memory stick. The wifi and bluetooth are built in to the...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

Also, it looks like it'll never crash in the console.
  20. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

While wandering around menus, I ran some sort of rescue console and took a picture because I saw a complaint about ACPI. I don't know what it means, but I'll post it here and do the bare bones strip...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

Do you recommend I install all current available updates, or would that potentially make troubleshooting more complicated? I could do this from the command line since it seems stable there, and as a...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

Ok, so... I used ls, cd, zip and ftp to get the file to myself on another computer. See attachments. I included more than just the logs you asked for... 239655 If the attachment doesn't work, it's...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

I think I'm doing the magic key correctly because I did it 4 times now pre-crash but post crash it only worked once, so I think that was a fluke of that simply being the arbitrary time at which the...
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

I just booted from the USB I installed from and went into the "try Ubuntu" mode. Same results, so I think that rules out the SSD. I tried your key combo too. The first attempt it restarted before I'd...
  25. [ubuntu] Green rectangles appear, system is immediately unresponsive and then reboots

I just completed a new build and think I did comprehensive hardware research for Linux incompatibility issues, but after a silky smooth installation I logged in and got green lines / rectangles...
