What hardware are you running? I have i3-550, and I am running *Mountain* Lion in VMWare, and it is not the slightest bit sluggish with just 4Gb ram. If you have old hardware, it is not going to get...
I think you could be getting confused with Windows; Mac OS X needs you to put in your admin password AND press "[Restart]" button before it restarts, and if things have changed since last time I used...

I don't think I am "right", by the way - those were just my opinions, and noone is compelled to agree; I am a little more humble than that :)
Apple have an exemplary graphics team, whereas Ubuntu? I'll leave it with you that their graphics "design" decisions are arbitrary, at best. Orange and brown? mmmmm! Yummy ^_^
