[ubuntu] Re: Not finding apps easily in GNOME - 13.10

Go and have a look at your system. View "All Apps" in the Activities Overview. Scroll down alphabetically to the Utilities folder and click on it. See the calculator there? Categories have been...

Re: Which torrent client do you use and why ?

I used transmission for years but it does not work with the gnome3 ppa's (it writes randomly named files and directories in your home dir!) so I have been using qbitorrent nowadays and find it...

[ubuntu] Re: Not finding apps easily in GNOME - 13.10

GNOME 3 Shell has added folders in the activities view. So Calculator is in the "Utilities" folder.

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 today and had this same problem. Just get "failed to add new printer" even though I see my printer transiently get identified. Finding this post, I see...

    Re: gnome core apps

I install stock Ubuntu then gnome team ppa's + gnome-shell because I would prefer to keep Unity as a log in option (like to check occasionally how it is going). Also, I think the standard Ubuntu...

[ubuntu] Re: Failed to load the package list

Yes, it seems all ok now. Run the software updater manually to see and install any pending updates.

[ubuntu] Re: Failed to load the package list

Try this. It won't hurt anything:

    sudo rm -rf /var/cache/apt/archives /var/lib/apt/lists
    sudo apt-get update

Be careful to type or copy/paste that first command exactly.

    Re: SSH port forwarding

OP, it seems you are trying to do 2 unrelated things there but confused them together. If you want to access the transmission web server (as papibe suggests?) remotely from Uni, then you need a local...
  10. Re: How to sync files/directories between PC's?

We use rsync to sync files on all Linux, Unix, and Mac systems. I use the free deltacopy program to rsync to/from windows pcs.

  12. Re: Why agile software development model is used by Microsoft?

Rather an odd question/discussion to bring up on a Ubuntu linux site?

Whatever process Microsoft uses would be one I would likely eliminate.

  14. [ubuntu] Re: can i use awk to do this instad of a for do read loop?

I've written shell and awk scripts for over 23 years but nowadays we would do all that in python (or perl or ruby if they float your boat). I.e traverse and read the files, generate the hashes,...
  15. Re: A terminal that can open a new tab by command line?

You should consider using screen or tmux (preferred) for this functionality instead. That's a better way to multiplex multiple terminal sessions rather than using tabs.

    Re: Thinking of buying Chromebook!

If this argument was valid then it would apply to tablets also.

I would guess that most of us, particularly the type who visit here, pretty much have fast internet access nearly everywhere we go....

Re: Purge Unity, replace with gnome-core

From a standard Ubuntu desktop install, you don't need to remove Unity and you don't need to install a whole new ISO.

Just "apt-get install gnome-shell" then log out, select GNOME (instead of...

  19. Re: [US] Lo-$ Choice for GSM/SMS for Alarm System?

For my custom home alarm system I just send an email to a email/SMS gateway service. There are heaps of them and they are cheap and reliable.

Re: How to "make" a software in 32 bit mode

Without detail you can't get any help.
  21. [all variants] Re: Is it possible to use rsnapshot with rsyncd instead of ssh?

I would try the rsyncd approach. It's easy to configure and I would guess that it would be quite a bit quicker than via ssh, and maybe also than nfs.
  22. [all variants] Re: Is it possible to use rsnapshot with rsyncd instead of ssh?

The rsnapshot server configuration is the same regardless of whether your client is windows or linux. Just put "rsync://" in front of your paths on the "backup" commands in your rsnapshot.conf if you...
  23. [all variants] Re: Is it possible to use rsnapshot with rsyncd instead of ssh?

Of course it is possible to use rsyncd. You specify it in the url just as if you were using rsync by hand. E.g.

    rsync -av pc:/tmp/x .

would copy remote file x to . using ssh transport.
