plymouth is the software that ubuntu uses to display the progress screens during boot and shutdown.
as i said it displays normally during shutdown, but just as you described nothing whatsoever...
during bootup, on my system with the radeon kms driver, my displays turn off (both showing 'no signal' messages) between grub and lightdm.
grub displays normally, lightdm graphical login displays...
just noting my findings here in case anyone searches this thread.
i found that the problem occurred in any 'heavyweight' desktop environment, but not in light wm environments like fluxbox......
