Lubuntu good choice. I have not used the alternate installer before but now I have to give that a shot.

If you go to fontsy or dafont.com download a font you like and run this code:
gksu nautilus /usr/share/fonts/truetype
in the terminal or by pressing alt + f2
and copy the extracted font...

OK your welcome yeah that's what I learned from the .Xauthority hell is if you can't get to the gui in 30 minutes it's best to just reinstall. well good luck.
sorry looks like those commands will only work when usding the terminal emulators like gnome-terminal or xterm.

What had happened to me was the root account had taken possession of the .Xauthority file and I couldn't log in with the gui.

My laptop wasn't on the hardware compatibly list either but but ubuntu is update with drivers and just works with most hardware that is out there the sd card reader didn't work maybe like 4 or 5...
Does tty7 show the login screen or is it only a login prompt?
Idk I used to get that on windows it's like one image is set as the album art for most of the files in the folder. I hated seeing that in the music folder.

Hi if your going to try to install Ubuntu again something I like to do sometimes is boot into the ubuntu livecd or a gparted livecd. Partition everything first and set the partitions, mount points,...
