    Yes almost all the terminal commands will be the same and as for desktops once installed you just chose which desktop environment you want to log into from log in and you will be administrator.

    Have you tried using the shift key then getting into a text screen and changing the words quite splash with the word nomodeset then press f10 ? usually helps with graphics problems.

    Why are you upgrading to 12.10 it is no longer supported. Have you tried using nomodeset ?
