  1. Re: Is there something better than "dd"? (dd vs. "?" vs. Macrium)

Correct. I already have the zipped images. I can always change it up though. Ill look at cat and yeah, the "-1" was a typo I left in the script. I just use pv for some visual output. Do you (or...
  2. Re: Is there something better than "dd"? (dd vs. "?" vs. Macrium)

So really I gotta find a faster method to "dd" that works over SSH and gzip (or whatever).

I'm seeing a few places that say ddrescue doesnt work over SSH. :-k
  3. Re: Current, live, cli-only Ubuntu (or Debian)?

That was one route. I need to create a live system w/persistence that logs in as a user then runs a script. All automatically. I'm thinking I might need to go Arch.
  4. Current, live, cli-only Ubuntu (or Debian)?

I currently have a need for a live, cli-only (Ubuntu or Debian-based) linux. I just can't find one.

If not, I guess I'll have to make one. :) Suggestions welcome.
  5. Is there something better than "dd"? (dd vs. "?" vs. Macrium)

So professionally I use Macrium to copy and reimage hard drives. The 250GB drives usually take ~9mins to reimage. I wondered if I could come up with a better linux-based solution. I'm tinkering w/dd...
  6. [server] Is a PXE server right for this?

I currently flash Windows to new machines at my work with a USB thumb drive running Ubuntu. The drive runs live with a persistent partition that contains a .IMG file that gets DD'd to the actual hard...
  7. [all variants] Do I *need* windows installed for Ubuntu to work correctly?

I am about to build a new home server. I have built several new desktops that dual boot. However, one didn't work correctly until I put windows on it. Will I have any issues with newer motherboards...

    [all variants] Open audiobook format/container?

It seems odd to me but I can't find any info on an open alternative to .m4b and the like. Maybe something based on Matroska?

[all variants] Embedding lyrics in FLAC files?

There's an old thread on this I'm hoping to see if we can breathe life into.

I'm looking for a standard way to embed lyrics into FLAC. Best I can find is creating separate .lrc files. There's also...
  10. Better way to pull the tags from the .m4a

Kinda of old thread here but maybe you guys can think of a better way to pull the tags from the .m4a files that I. I'm looking @ "mpeg4ip-utils" (its in the repos) but specifically "mp4info"....
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu doesn't boot unless USB with installation file plugged in

You know, slightly off-topic but this could be a neat security feature for some. While not a total show-stopper it would slow folks down who didn't know you needed the thumb drive in. :P
  12. [all variants] VLC daemon (or bg process) and VLC android remotes.

So I'm using the VLC Remote (beta) Android app. It works really nicely. I'm wondering though if there's a way to run VLC in the bg so it's on all the time but doesn't show a UI and exits the video...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Can't make MPD stream MP3 through IceCast2

Just a note, everyone with a LP account that wants this to hit as a normal update must enable the -proposed repo and make sure it works. Then, comment HERE.

[ubuntu] Re: a player called deadbeef

Hmm... It worked once for me. Cover art. I've followed the directions on the PPA and self-compiled versions. I can't get art to show for the live of me. :(

    Tips?

[ubuntu] Re: Disable builtin card reader

So, not exactly what the OP wants to do but related. I have one of those Dell monitors with the multi-card reader in the side of it. I never use 'em and I have entries for them in Nautilus. (even...

I was using the PPA until I figured out my little HOW-TO method above.

[ubuntu] Re: a player called deadbeef

If you don't quite know what I mean, SVN (svnversion) and BZR (bzr revno) have ways to print the current revision. I don't think theres a GIT equivalent, so I just chose to print the date.

    Got...

[ubuntu] Re: a player called deadbeef

I'll add a little "how-to" later but HERES the build deps and he hosts his code using GIT.

  22. [ubuntu] Re: Can't make MPD stream MP3 through IceCast2

@bdrung looks like Martin is rejecting the SRU.

This is why I suggested a backport and not a SRU. In my experience with developing Ubuntu Studio *anything* adding a new feature would fail a SRU.

  23. [ubuntu] Re: Can't make MPD stream MP3 through IceCast2

Sure. I didn't think it would qualify for a SRU. :) And DONE.
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Can't make MPD stream MP3 through IceCast2

Awesome bdrung. I'm sure lots of folks will like this. :) Maybe we can get a backport for 10.10?
  25. Re: Which Android device to get? Phone/Tablet/PMP

So, taking a couple of days to watch the Android world I think I wanna get something with Android 2.3. I'm also gonna go with a phone for now and wait for a table toward the end maybe next year.
