I found this thread via google as I have 2 similar problems
1 - difficulty stopping gdm so as to install / reinstall nvidia driver and
2 - gpu not always recognized on subsequent reboots....
I put a GTS 250 in the latest hardy (8.04) and installed that 190.53 from nvidia.
